Can typing errors be corrected?
The dissertation must be presented exactly as it was submitted for examination. Please clarify any subsequent corrections with the Dean's Office.
Can the bibliography be modified with additional entries?
The printed copies must be presented exactly as submitted for examination.
Is the examination date the same as the date of the doctorate, or does it refer to the date of the oral examination (scientific defense)?
For the examination date, please enter the official date you are awarded the doctorate.
How many deposit copies do I need to hand in to the University Library?
The number of copies to be submitted depends on the publication format of the dissertation:
- Dissertation published via publishing house: Submit 2 copies
- Dissertation published in print:
Submit 4 printed copies, 1 copy in metal-free hardcover, 3 copies in softcover (2 copies go to the German National Library). - Dissertation published electronically:
Submit 2 printed copies, 1 copy in metal-free hardcover, 1 copy in softcover.
How many copies do I have to submit if I publish via Print-on-demand?
If you publish via publishing house, only 2 printed copies are required.
Can I submit the deposit copies in person, or do they have to be submitted by post?
They can be submitted either by post or in person during service hours at the University Medical Library or via the yellow box at the Georg Forster Library information desk.

Is double-sided printing allowed?
Yes, please print double-sided.
What format should my dissertation be in?
The dissertation can be in DIN A4 or DIN A5 format.
Is embossing required on the cover?
No, that is not necessary.
What type of binding is required?
One copy should be in a metal-free hardcover, and one in softcover.
Can the print and electronic editions differ?
Print and online editions must be identical. Pages removed for data protection reasons must be replaced with blank pages.
Can the acknowledgments section in the online version be deleted completely or should only the names be omitted?
You may delete the acknowledgments in the electronic version. However, you may need to insert a blank page to ensure that the printed and electronic versions have the same page numbers.
How should I handle personal data, such as the names of supervisors, co-authors or individuals mentioned in the acknowledgments?
For the electronic version, either all names must be deleted (or blacked out, made unrecognizable) or the consent of the individuals named must be obtained.
The printed version may contain the names.
Can I place an embargo on my dissertation?
Yes. However, please note the following information; the electronic version must be uploaded directly to Gutenberg Open Science.

Do I have to submit an electronic version?

Your dissertation will be assigned a permanent internet address and will be archived at the German National Library. This ensures that it remains citable and preserved for the long term.
Will my dissertation also be discoverable via Google?
Yes, the dissertation will be indexed and discoverable by search engines. Overall, it will significantly increase its visibility. The dissertation will also be listed in library catalogs.
Under which re-use rights can I publish in Gutenberg Open Science?

Can I still publish with a publisher if I have already published via Gutenberg Open Science?

What should I consider if parts of my dissertation have already been published in journals?
All publishers and corresponding authors must provide written consent for the publication of your work. Please secure written approvals from all involved parties, including the dean, reviewers, supervisors, and other contributors, and keep them in a safe place.
