ORCID—Unique, Persistent and Global

ORCID, short for Open Researcher and Contributor iD, is an international unique identifier for researchers. It consists of a 16-digit number linked to an account at the not-for-profit organization orcid.org.

What are the key benefits of an ORCID iD?

  • By providing a persistent identifier, ORCID ensures an unambiguous record of research and enables reliable accreditation of authorship, regardless of name similarities, name changes and spelling variations, etc.
  • Researchers can maintain their ORCID iD, even when changing institutions
  • Centralized profile management: Researchers can organize their publications, projects and awards in one place (integration to Gutenberg Research Elements for synchronous data management possible).
  • Improved discoverability: The ORCID iD enhances visibility of ones research findings, e.g. through websites or email signatures.
  • Global standard: ORCID is widely used by funding organizations, publishers and repositories.
  • Faster publication process: Standard information can be automatically transferred via ORCID.
  • Free, independent and easy to set up: Registration takes just seconds—only a name and email address are required.

In its publication guidelines, Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU) supports the use of ORCID iDs for publications, funding applications, conferences and similar purposes.

The Mainz University Library is a member of the Deutschlandkonsortium ORCID DE, which promotes ORCID in Germany and facilitates its implementation in the research landscape.
